Extracurricular activities for
children cheaply - my first tip is
what can you actually teach the children
yourself ?why would you need to outsource
all of their extracurricular activities
when actually some of them are
things you can teach yourself. So for
example I teach my children a little bit
of Spanish - we have the duolingo app that
we do, I've just printed off a few things
and we're kind of learning it together. T
hat saves us money on language tuition
another thing that we teach our children
ourselves is self-defense so the there
are a number of videos on YouTube we
just get them to do little bits of
practice here and there and every time
we have a spare a couple of minutes
we'll do a little bit of Spanish or a
little bit of self-defense or teach them
our Internet safety anything that I
think is important we also have a book
called you are awesome definitely
recommend that and that's a book I'll
link it below and that's a book to build
self-esteem and to help children learn
about the importance of practice and not
giving up it's really really good to
really help our children so we did that
every now and again as well I also get
them to practice their swimming moves
regularly so swimming lessons are very
expensive
my children are self-taught and what I
do to help them get the rhythm practice
is just us and to sit off and practice
each stroke and again it's easier than
going to regular lessons and it means
that when they do get back in the water
with me they're much more likely to be
able to remember how to do the strokes
I've been doing this with each child a
half an hour to an hour a week
some check-in time with them it's great
to have some one-to-one time another
thing that we've done is think ahead
about what sports would be expensive so
when children of us to do sports I've
kind of looked into the cost of things
we also just say to them only do one
sport at a time so they have like a
Scouts activity per week and they also
have another activity sporting activity
per week there they can choose to do so
both of my children have chosen football
it's a really cheap activity for them to
do because they have just football in
the garden with some girls they can have
friends want to play and practice a lot
without having to have a really
expensive tuition all the time they do
get to go two nights a week and one game
a week of training so they do get plenty
of training but just generally I'm not
having to pay every night for both boys
to do an activity have a look and see
what's cheap in your area so it could be
that your area has a really good judo
class and that is cheap and really
really good could be that your area has
really good football facilities or
netball facilities so give them a choice
but steer them towards what's available
was good and cheap in your area I
definitely would recommend the scouting
movement there's also something called
Boys Brigade here in Scotland that's
quite popular that kind of think is some
spread of activities so they do tennis
and bowling and camping and all sorts of
activities it's not just focused on one
of the things that's a good way to get a
nice spread of activities it's quite
cheap as well my subscription is 35
pounds for a whole year keep looking out
for hand-me-down equipment in charity
shops so my children we only really need
football boots which they get for
Christmas thank you so you could ask for
presents for the equipment that they
need but keep an eye out in charge of
shops for things that come up that
people don't want anymore
and obviously it's going to be given to
charity as well remember to check and
ask for items on your local Facebook
selling sites and also check Gumtree and
set up an alert on gumtree
another great source of free and cheap
equipment is to work out if there are
older boys and girls doing the sport try
and prevent their parents and get into a
line where we pass down equipment
another thing you can also do a try
school fairs local community fairs
sometimes people put in their equipment
- things like that and it can be quite
cheap and the other thing is to ask the
charity shops and ask local shops that
take at secondhand goods then ask them
to keep the goods that you need for you
maybe leave a telephone number I try and
keep a running list in my phone of items
and equipment that I think I might be
needing in the next few months to a year
and that way I can always look for them
in the charity shops I know what sizes
I've got at home and I can also use it
if people ask for presents another tip
is to not buy branded goats so if I get
my children the lower branded products
they work just as well and it means that
I'm not spending money just on a brand
if they want to get the branded products
like the added asset and things like
that then they have to use their own
Christmas money or birthday money or
earn them somehow I don't like paying
just for a brand and it's a good lesson
to teach them early on another thing to
do is keep your car stocked full of
essentials so if you think you might
forget water and you might forget a
jumper or you might get gloves put them
into your car and make sure you stopped
always with things so you never have to
pay to buy these things we save money on
extracurricular music by having a look
at what we can teach ourselves we were
gifted a piano and we also found a
keyboard secondhand that works perfectly
by the way check your keyboard in the
charity shop and ask if you can return
other music like keyboards and other
musical items for a refund if they don't
work when you get them home
we've also found guitars and been gifted
guitars as well when you want to start
to learn how to play music with your
children there are a couple of YouTube
videos that you could watch to help you
learn how to read music and also play
the basics if you want to continue to
learn the music outside of school
another thing that you could do is
approach a music teacher as a group so
maybe there are a couple of other
children that want to learn music again
you could join together and see if the
music teacher will let you pay for the
price of one lesson between three kids
three children you could also try it
local universities music departments to
try and find students that be willing to
tutor this could cut costs a lot another
thing you could do is check out the
local library for free music lessons and
music activities and also remember
practicing at home is just as important
as having the lessons free music can be
found online and if you also approach
your school's secondary skills as well
as their primary skills they should be
able to provide you with music for free
for art again there are loads of YouTube
tutorial videos that will help you to
start to learn art and different
techniques with your children if they're
interested in art another thing that you
could do is check out local art centers
galleries museums sometimes also offer
free little art lessons and tuition for
art equipment again that's great
to suggest to other people for presents
and also have a shop around you can find
quite expensive art products in art
shops but you might find smaller
stationery shops and pawn shops have the
same kind of products for much much
cheaper my last tip is carpooling make
sure that you are in a group of parents
make sure you speak to the parents and
organize that you're not always travel
spending fuel on going to training so we
do that and we take once a week and the
rest of the week is taken care of and
obviously make sure you plan your time
when you're going to their practices and
extracurricular activities if you're
there make sure you have some activities
to do yourself maybe you could do some
surveys and make some money that way I
sometimes go for a walk so it saves me
on exercise time and in membership lots
of things that you can do to use your
time well when you're there I hope you
enjoyed my video if you'd like to see
